Okay, I've decided to consolidate a bunch of the discussions happening through E-mail with info and discussion concerning the first meeting of the year and similar topics into this one discussion thread. Soooo... Discuss!
First, the meeting(s) - Our first official meeting will be on the 26th. We need to decide what we're going to do to kick off the new year. Hopefully we will have new members so it should be accessible to them, but just in case nobody shows up*knocks on wood* it musn't be irrelevant to current members. Any ideas?
Also, We've decided to hand out the fliers at the assembly before the meeting, rather than at Registration Sunday, as most people will be doing finances and generally in a bad mood. Not only that but things are becoming more and more online-centric, and we'd likely not see the turn out we desire. I also think we need to start posting fliers around campus, but more official looking ones since we're not just handing them out.
I would like to propose a meeting for us cabinet members that happens before the one on the 26th, however, where we discuss our plans for the year. I can form my schedule to fit most others, so you guys will have to come up with a time.
Now for T-Shirts. I'm going to paste the conversations thus far and associated images.
"Here's a T-Shirt Design I slapped Together to see what you'd think." -El Presidente
"Let’s think of a slogan to go either on the back or below the logo.
Maybe something about Puppy Apocalypse? <Just kidding>
Am working on the flyer." - Dr. Robinson
"Personally, I think that putting the text around the image anywhere would be unaesthetic. On the other hand, slogans don't do so well on the back, either. Putting the image on the back and text on the front doesn't appeal to me either because I like the bold image of wearing the logo on the chest.
If I were to make my own opinion heard, it would be to keep the slogan short and simple and put it on the left sleeve. Possible slogans could include:
(descending the sleeve in a tight indented formation)
"Stories
Novels
Poetry "
"We Are The Art Of Writing"
(a bit long...)
"If there's a book you really want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it. ~Toni Morrison"
"I'm not a very good writer, but I'm an excellent rewriter. ~James Michener"
Or any good writing quote, really...
(Please let no one take this seriously)
"We Like It Rough"
I'm totally open to suggestions here. " - El Presidente
"The "we like it rough" was amusing. Personally, having the logo on the back would make more ascetical sense. Perhaps putting something like "Tally Ho!" on the front with a small parenthetical note to see the back.
If I had to choose among the aforementioned I would choose the writing on the sleeve along with the picture on the front. There's an option to add names to the back, maybe we could have our own preference of nicknames on the back." - Scott
"Here are some quotes as ideas:
'Happy productive writers are naturally dull creatures.' –Clancy Segal
'A writer’s obituary should read: ‘He wrote books then he died.’' –William Faulkner
'Contrary to popular impression, writers, unlike pole vaulters, do not know when they have done their best….' –John Up
'The function of a writer is to raise questions not to find answers.' --Doris Lessing
'A man may write at any time, if he will set himself doggedly to do it.' --Samuel Johnson
'Writers that hang out together are no bloody good.' --Ernest Hemingway
I have a book with a bunch more if you are interested. We can bring it to the first meeting if you want."
Feel free to continue the discussion. I think a quote could work on the back with the logo on front, but if we get a slogan it should be the sleeve.
Both me and Dr. Robinson agree that the quote should be funny or catchy, but I want to make sure that the quote isn't a sentiment we'd readily disagree with or that would say something contrary to the spirit of a group of writers.
(Which is why, personally, I'd vote against Hemming way's quote there at the end.)
I would like to add a suggestion to the logo battle: "Onward and Upward!" - a phrase which both me and Dr. Robinson like.
Let's talk everybody!
