As I mentioned at our meeting tonight, I discovered a new, good author for military science fiction. That author is Jack Campbell, and the book is "Dauntless," the first volume in the Lost Fleet series. He writes in a straightforward, no-nonsense way, is good at getting into the head of his characters, and had a good handle on what space battles would really be like.
On a scale of ten, I give him about an 8.5.

If anyone is interested at all in any Star Wars Novels, I highly recomend the Trawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn. Some of it is outdated because of the cononization of the Prequels, but good nontheless.

Am deep in the second book by Campbell, and it hasn't let me down yet. Which is refreshing.
I read another book, this one by David Weber, entitled "Off Armageddon Reef," and was immediately blown away, it was so good. When the sequel came out, I bought it before it had even hit the stores. But I was sorely disappointed. It was full of talking and no action. I hate it when that sort of thing happens.

Speaking of disappointment (this probably belongs in the fantasy section) but the Sequel to Green Rider by Kristen Britain was horrid. The first book was great though.
