Drip...drip...drip. Mackenzie had stopped hearing the constant sound a week ago. It became the music of her stay here-slow, monotonous, neverending.
The dark dungeon cell was her home of almost three weeks. She had no companions, no comforts. Once a day she was given a bowl of soup, if it could be called that, and half a loaf of bread. She didn't mind. What was the point of eating? Soon, she would be at peace. Dempsey thought it would be revenge. He didn't realize Mackenzie longed for the silent company of the ones she had lost.
The opened loudly and the guard set down a tray of food. It was not the usual bread and soup. It was filled with fruit, cheese, meat, all of the fixings for a feast. Mackenzie stared at it with no emotion.
"I don't need all that."
"Master's orders, miss. He wants your last meal to be pleasurable."
The guard smirked and left the cell. Mackenzie straightened and sighed. "My last meal," she whispered to the dripping water. Instead of crying, she crawled to the tray of food and picked up a peach. She held it to her nose, savoring its fragrance.
"Why hasn't he come for me? I am perfectly content to die, but for that one question. He promised."
Mackenzie took a bite from the peach. She smiled slightly, allowing the sweetness to transport her from the cell...

Slam! Mackenzie opened her eyes slowly, longing for her dream to return.
"Ah, Mackenzie, I do hate to see our relationship end like this. I've always thought quite highly of you."
Mackenzie stared into the friendly face of Dempsey. To any ignorant person, he was the most harmless creature one could imagine. He seemed so now, even to Mackenzie. Then, she pictured her parents, her best friend. She looked at the dripping water. Under his charming demeanor, Dempsey was a true monster.
"Is it time?"
Dempsey's kind look disappeared. He replaced it with an evil grin.
"So impatient, darling. Why? Do you still believe he will rescue you?"
He placed his fingers under the drip, shaking his head.
"Wake up! He lied, Mackenzie. You will never see him again. If you realize this and deny your loyalty to him, and join me, you won't have to die."
"He promised, Dempsey. And I would rather die and be at peace than join you," Mackenzie stated, staring straight into his eyes.
Dempsey nodded his head and turned to the guard. "It is time."

Mackenzie stood on the platform, surrounded by an evil mob. The followers of Dempsey were eager to show their loyalty to him. They booed and yelled and made violent gestures towards Mackenzie. She stood tall, tears running down her cheeks.
The guard tied her to the pole in the middle. On the edge of the crowd, Dempsey stared with a hint of regret at the beautiful woman on the platform. Age and sorrow had only improved her. Dempsey turned away, and the guard lit his torch.
