The upstairs bathroom was locked. Evelyn was sure because she had double checked. But no one was home to inquire about the low sobbing that leaked through the door. Her older siste, Hannah had taken Patrick for some fetch, and wouldn’t be back for another hour. No amount of time would be enough for Evelyn to sort her jumbled thoughts.
Her body was collapsed into a mess of legs and long brown hair where the bathtub met the wall. Hair danced on her back as her strong frame trembled with fear and shame. So this is what rock bottom feels like. She never imagined this moment being part of her life’s story. Not like this. It was nothing like the gas station scene in Juno. Evelyn tried desperately to remember what had been so amusing when she had watched it in theaters, hoping that somehow she would come to the punch-line in her own scene.
“Your ego’s prego.” Evelyn shrieked the words through a confusion of laughter and tears.

Hartwell Adventist Academy welcomed Dr. Schekter as the guest speaker for Wednesday afternoon assembly. He had come to tell the student body about the importance of abstinence. Evelyn Harvey stood in the back with the other faculty members and did not display a single sign of discomfort, but her thoughts betrayed her appearance.

“Miss Harvey?” her pupil interrupted.
“Oh, Kaylee. Hi!” she responded.
Kaylee was late to assembly as usual, but early enough to get an attendance slip. Evelyn’s guilt was playing tricks on her mind. For a split second she felt as though her favorite student had dug a hole into her stomach, reached in, and pulled out the truth.
“This theory stuff is kicking me in the butt.” Kaylee stated bluntly. “You free during 7th?”
Evelyn agreed to the request, and the familiarity of the situation lulled her into a false sense of security.
